For three decades, Disney Pixar Toy Story has been one of the most beloved film franchises in the world. From Woody's loyalty and leadership to Buzz Lightyear's sense of adventure, the characters have become household names for generations of children and parents alike.

But their influence appears to extend beyond the toy box.

With Toy Story 5 on the horizon, we wanted to explore just how much the beloved franchise has influenced families over the years. Our research revealed that names inspired by Toy Story characters have seen significant increases following each film release, suggesting many parents have taken inspiration from Woody, Buzz, Rex and Jessie when naming their children.

Why do films influence unique baby names?

Popular culture has long played a role in shaping baby naming trends. From television shows and books to music and films, fictional characters often become associated with qualities that parents admire and want to pass on to their children. Characters such as Woody, Buzz, Jessie and Rex have become familiar companions to generations of families. As a result, their names often feel recognisable and distinctive, making them popular and often unique baby names for parents looking for something a little different. Movie inspired names can also carry positive associations linked to a character's personality, values or story, helping them remain popular baby names long after a film leaves cinemas.

The Disney Pixar Toy Story Toys Behind the UK's Biggest Baby Name Trends

Analysis of the ONS data on UK baby naming trends since the release of the original Toy Story in 1995 found:

  • Toy Story inspired names increased by an average of 31% in the two years following each film release

  • Buzz saw the biggest increase, rising by 280% following Toy Story 4

  • Jessie names surged by 91% after Toy Story 3

  • Rex names increased by 69% following Toy Story 3

  • Woody names rose by 36% after Toy Story 3

The findings highlight the remarkable cultural impact the franchise has had across multiple generations of British families.

Woody

Before Toy Story first arrived in cinemas in 1995, Woody was a relatively uncommon choice for UK parents. Since then, the name has enjoyed a steady rise in popularity, reaching its biggest post-release boost following Toy Story 3, when registrations increased by 36%.

As the heart of the franchise, Woody's loyalty, kindness and leadership have made his character a favourite among audiences since 1995. The name carries a timeless, friendly appeal that continues to resonate with families today.

Buzz

While Woody's popularity grew steadily over time, Buzz's rise was much more dramatic (some might say, it sky rocketed!). The name didn't appear in UK baby name records until 2019, coinciding with the release of Toy Story 4. In the year that followed, registrations jumped by 280%, making Buzz the character with the biggest impact on baby naming trends in our study.

Originally introduced as the confident and adventurous Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, the character has become one of Pixar's most recognisable and much loved creations. His unique name, optimism and sense of adventure also contribute to its appeal among parents looking for a more unusual choice.

Jessie

Unlike Woody and Buzz, Jessie was already a popular baby name choice among UK parents before she first appeared in Toy Story 2. While the character's arrival coincided with modest growth in the years that followed, her biggest impact came after Toy Story 3. In the two years following the film's release, registrations surged by 91%, making Jessie one of the biggest Toy Story inspired naming success stories in our research. Although popularity has declined since Toy Story 4, the release of Toy Story 5 could give the adventurous cowgirl another moment in the spotlight.

The energetic cowgirl is known for her bravery, independence and determination. As a classic name with enduring popularity, Jessie offers a balance between familiarity and character-inspired charm.

Rex

Despite being known as Toy Story's nervous dinosaur, Rex has shown remarkable staying power when it comes to baby names. Unlike some of the franchise's other characters, every Toy Story sequel has been followed by growth in Rex registrations. The name experienced its biggest boost after Toy Story 3, increasing by 69% within two years of release, proving that this anxious T-Rex may be more influential than anyone expected.

Disney Pixar Toy Story became a cross-generational phenomenon

One reason Toy Story continues to influence families is its unique ability to connect generations. Many parents welcoming children today grew up watching Toy Story themselves. Now, with Toy Story 5 introducing the characters to a new audience, families have the opportunity to share the stories they loved as children with their own sons and daughters. This enduring popularity has helped keep Woody, Buzz, Jessie and Rex firmly embedded in popular culture for more than 30 years.
